Toowoomba Acupuncturist Discusses Acupuncture For Headaches

Headaches can be debilitating, and those that suffer from them often suffer silently. Acupuncture works to relieve the frequency and severity of headache symptoms by treating the brain’s neural pathways and by altering the activity of the brain’s limbic system, which can control our perception of pain. Acupuncture is an ancient Chinese practice that employs needles on the skin to restore the body from symptoms of illness, injury and disease, and is very beneficial at treating all types of headaches.

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is founded on the principle that energy channels (meridians) run all over the body, nourishing tissues with energy (Qi). When blocked, this energy is obstructed and prevented from nourishing the tissues, which may result in poor states of physical, emotional and mental health.

According to recent research (1), there is “strong evidence supporting the effectiveness of acupuncture” for Headache (tension-type and chronic) and Migraine prophylaxis.

How Can Acupuncture Help With Headaches?

Acupuncture works to relieve the frequency and severity of headache symptoms by:

1 – Treating the brain’s neural pathways and by altering the activity of the brain’s limbic system, which can control our perception of pain.

2 – Reducing symptoms of physical, emotional and mental stress, and

3 – Clearing any blocked energy causing the headache itself.

 Acupuncture Points for Headaches

A professional acupuncturist will work through your diagnosis with you to develop a suitable treatment plan according to your headache symptoms. The practitioner will first determine where energy is blocked according to the exact location and type of headache being experienced. Only then will they address and needle the appropriate acupuncture points accordingly (in order to restore energy flow).

Most acupuncturists will focus on points on the head and neck, but due to dilation in the already enlarged blood capillaries, this may cause the headache to worsen at which point the Acupuncturist will focus instead on acupuncture points on the hands, arms, legs and feet. A professional acupuncturist will treat different points around the body depending on the type of headache being experienced.

Acupuncture Differentiation of Headache Type

Headaches at the top of the headThese headaches are often dull and may indicate a deficiency in liver qi (energy) and blood reaching the brain.

Headaches on both sides of the headThese headaches are most often associated with blocked liver energy, and may be throbbing and sharp in character.

Headaches on the foreheadThese headaches are thought to indicate either stomach deficiencies, phlegm congestion of the head or from exposure to too much wind.

Occipital headachesUsually coupled with stiffness in the back and neck, this type of headache is often caused by stagnant kidney energy.

Entire head headachesAcute whole-head headaches are sharp and severe in character and are thought to be due to the invasion of external wind. Chronic whole-head headaches are thought to be due to a deficiency in kidney energy and may be accompanied by a feeling of emptiness in the head.

How Many Treatments Will I Need?

The number of acupuncture treatments required to treat regular headaches will differ between individuals. For chronic headache conditions however, treatments for up to several months may be recommended. Initially, about 7 weekly treatments are required to balance acupuncture meridians, and markedly reduce occurrence.

Generally, once the frequency of headaches has reduced, and/or their intensity has lessened, the time between treatments is increased to fortnightly for a few treatments, and then increased to a treatment every three (3) weeks, and then monthly to ensure they do not recur. Every person is individual and the treatment course may vary accordingly.

Every once in a while, we begin to focus our attention on our most valuable possession, our health. Fortunately, we feel fine most of the time. The important thing to remember is that problems don’t just happen overnight. They develop slowly over days, weeks, and even years.

What would happen if you stopped brushing your teeth on a daily basis? Over time you may experience tooth decay and possibly periodontal disease. Would you wait until your teeth started falling out before going to the dentist? Of course not. In other words, it’s always time to “brush-up” on your health. It’s my experience that periodic visits and seasonal tune-ups can potentially catch little problems before they become bigger problems. Not only that, tune-ups can help your body and mind make a smooth transition into each new season.

It’s recommended that you have a regular tune-up treatment to maintain the smooth flow of Qi in the meridians, and to prevent the likelihood of future recurrence of headaches. Remember that the TCM paradigm is to PREVENT disease from occurring, and optimise the state of good health and wellness and the sense of well-being. Subsequently, I encourage patients to indulge themselves with regards to their health, and look forward to a regular Health Tune-up and Service, so to speak.

Migraine Sufferers Also Helped By Acupuncture

Migraines are common and recurrent, and treatments to prevent migraines are often not well tolerated due to significant side effects. A new study (1) suggests that acupuncture may be useful in helping to prevent recurrence of migraines. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, migraine headaches are thought to be caused by the stagnation of Qi (pronounced “chee”, as in cheese), or life force, leading to an upsurge of energy to the head via the meridians that travel along the side of the body.

Treatment is directed towards driving the excess energy downwards, away from the head. These headaches are believed to be triggered by the emotion anger, and, interestingly, stress is recognised as a common trigger for migraines.

Initially 7 to 10 treatments are required at weekly intervals. After the frequency and intensity of the migraines have reduced the treatments are spread out to fortnightly, then 3-weekly, until monthly tune-ups allow the sufferer to live a life mostly free from migraines. I have been helping migraine sufferers live a life mostly free of migraines for 3 decades.

So if you would love to be free from disabling migraines, and enjoy life to the full without spending the day lying down in the dark, join the queue, and call ANTRAC Acupuncture Clinic for an appointment NOW, on (07) 4636 6100, or email us for more information at

Accupuncture, Acupunture or Accupunture common misspelling

Note that “Acupuncture” is often misspelt as accupuncture, acupunture or accupunture, that is with either too many c’s or not enough c’s. I would love to be able to clear up this very common spelling mistake, and set the record straight.

Ac·u·punc·ture – pronounced ak-yoo-puhngk-cher; Origin: 1675–85; < Latin acū with a needle (ablative of acus  needle) or acu- (as combining form of acus ) + puncture.
