The Toxicity of Fluoridated Water

Phoenix Vows to Re-Examine Health Effects of Water Fluoridation

Citizens in Phoenix, Arizona are also stepping up to the plate on this issue and were recently told a council subcommittee would accept expert testimony on water fluoridation. According to AZCentral:
“Council members said that after 23 years, it’s time to re-examine the health effects and financial impact of the practice. Phoenix spends about $582,000 per year, or about 39 cents per resident, to put fluoride in the water supply.”
AZCentral, along with The Arizona Republic hosted a live online chat on September 10, which included Will Humble, director of the Arizona Department of Health Services, and Deborah Dykema, a Phoenix-based osteopathic physician. Highlights of the discussion, which are posted on AZCentral, included the following questions and answers:
Q: Are there any studies showing that fluoride consumption from cereal, milk and soda is sufficient to combat tooth decay?

Dykema: Fluoride is not required for any body processes. It is listed as a toxic element in clinical toxicology journals. It is rated as more toxic than lead and only slightly less toxic than arsenic. Additionally, three courts have disagreed with that statement – Pennsylvania, Illinois and Texas – where they found the artificial fluoridation of water supplies may contribute to cancer, genetic damage and chronic toxicity, and the value of said artificial fluoridation is in doubt. There are many class-action lawsuits and courts that are currently weighing in on this topic and the forced mass-fluoridation issue is being rejected.

Humble: It depends. Depending on a person’s diet, they might get to an optimal level through the diet. For example, organic green tea contains a fair amount of fluoride, even without the water. So it depends on the person. At the community level, very few people get the optimal amount of fluoride just through dietary sources.

Q: Would it be easier to let people who want fluoride in their water add it after it is delivered to them?

Humble: It’s way easier to get the optimal level into the drinking water at the community level. If people were to estimate how much to add on their own, they’d be very likely to get too much or too little.

Dykema: The burden of proof when forcing mass medication on a population lies with the entity forcing that medication. It is up to the city of Phoenix to provide safety data in both long-term studies and toxicity on hydrofluorosilicic acid, and the fact is these studies have not been done.
Mr. Humble’s statement that individuals would be “very likely to get too much or too little” fluoride were they to add it to their own water is ironic in the extreme, considering the fact that this is exactly why it’s so dangerous to add it to municipal water supplies. It’s impossible to gauge or determine how much fluoride an individual will receive in this way, as water consumption will vary greatly from one individual to the next, and the “ideal dose” (if there were such a thing) will also vary depending on age, physical size, and underlying health issues.

For example, infants (who do not even have teeth yet) who are fed infant formula mixed with fluoridated water receive a disproportionate amount of fluoride compared to breastfed infants and older children and adults.

Fluoridation proponents are finally beginning to acknowledge the susceptibility of infants and young children to excessive fluoride intakes, likely because they can no longer deny the obvious effects that fluoride has on the developing teeth, in the form of dental fluorosis. Nearly 41 percent of adolescents aged 12-15 now have some form of dental fluorosis, an outwardly visible sign of fluoride over-exposure and toxicity. And if you can see it on your teeth, just imagine the internal damage you cannot see…

Imagine if the water you drank contained an invisible drug…

Fluoridated water
Is your water really safe to drink?
  • A drug so harmful that it’s been proven to cause serious health issues, including damage to your bones and teeth, as well as your kidneys, thyroid, pineal gland, and even your brain.
  • A drug so pervasive that 41% of all American children between the ages of 12 to 15 show visible signs of having been needlessly overexposed it. With recent international studies indicating that even small dosages can lower IQ in our kids.
  • A drug so unregulated that the FDA’s official classification is “Unapproved New Drug.” And yet, it’s still pumped into the water supply of over 180 million Americans, including infants and the elderly, with no way to control who gets it, how much they get, or what effect this mass dosing has on any given individual.

Regretfully, you do NOT have to use your imagination.

For over 50 years, Americans have been forced to drink a drug that causes serious health problems. This is nothing you have to make up. It’s very, very real.

The drug is fluoride.

Introduced during the same era in which the benefits of DDT and asbestos were being praised, officials hoped that mass fluoridation of public water supplies would be an effective and beneficial way to reduce tooth decay.

However, as you know, hope is not the stuff that public health policy should be made of. It should be based on sound and conclusive science.

Sadly, in recent years, the implications of such poor policy have become all too common.

That’s because, despite overwhelming evidence that demonstrates fluoridation does not help prevent tooth decay in any greater numbers than areas with non-fluoridated water, it’s estimated that 64% of all drinking water in the United States continues to receive this ill-advised treatment.

How is it that a drug and an outdated public health policy continue to be thrust upon the American people when ALL current research and science proves without any doubt that fluoridation is unnecessary and ineffective at best, and dangerous at an epidemic level at worst?

Do You Drink Suntan Lotion to Prevent Sunburn?

“They should be told that it doesn’t work by swallowing it.”

Toothpaste with Fluoride
Fluoride works best when applied topically.

Do you drink shampoo to clean your hair?

Of course not. These products obviously work when applied topically, not when taken internally or systemically.

Science proves that fluoride works in the same way. When topically applied (e.g., through the use of toothpaste), pharmaceutical-grade fluoride can help prevent tooth decay.

However, fluoride that is ingested provides little to no preventative protection against tooth decay.

In fact, when fluoride is taken internally, it actually causes problems with your teeth – a condition known as dental fluorosis, or a pocking, pitting and discoloration of teeth due to too much exposure to fluoride.

A mind-numbing 41% of American children between the ages of 12 and 14 have dental fluorosis.

If fluoride can damage your teeth from within, what else is it affecting inside your body?

When you drink fluoridated water, or consume any product that contains fluoridated water (e.g., soups, juices, soda), you expose yourself to the same dangers.

What kind of dangers am I talking about?

“There’s no doubt that the intake of fluoridated water is … not going to be to the benefit of anybody.”
– Dr Robert Isaacson, National Research Council Panelist

Dental Fluorosis
Excess fluoride may cause :

  • Dental fluorosis (staining and pitting of teeth)
  • Fatal bone cancer (osteosarcoma)
  • Weakened bones
  • Lowered thyroid function
  • Impaired mental development, lowered IQ, and  dementia
  • Arthritic symptoms
  • Chronic fatigue
  • Gastrointestinal problems
  • Kidney issues
  • Hyperactivity and/or lethargy
  • Disrupted immune system

These are just a few of the problems that have been associated with overexposure to fluoride.  Should you really be drinking fluoridated water?
