NEOCLASSICAL ACUPUNCTURE PUNCHES ABOVE ITS WEIGHT

Neoclassical Acupuncture in Toowoomba punches above its weight. Generally, only one needle is used per treatment.

For 42 years, I used to insert an average of 29 needles per Client. Now using Neoclassical Acupuncture in Toowoomba, for most of my Clients I only need to use one needle. Ironically, the results are more profound than using 29 needles! The creator of the protocol, Dr Slate Burris aptly calls the procedure the “One Needle Treatment”.

Dr Mark McAuliffe (1) of Mackay Acupuncture Natural Medicine was one of the first Neoclassical Acupuncture practitioners in Australia to be trained by Dr Slate Burris. He notes, “The concept of using a single needle in acupuncture is most famously discussed in Chapter 1 of the Ling Shu (灵枢), sometimes referred to as “The Spiritual Pivot.” This text is one of the foundational works of Traditional Chinese Medicine and is considered a core part of the Yellow Emperor’s Inner Canon (Huangdi Neijing) and was completed about 2 BCE.” Dr McAuliffe further notes that in the first Chapter of the Ling Shu, there is a discussion about the art and philosophy of acupuncture. This Chapter states that a skilled practitioner can treat complex conditions using minimal intervention. Thus, the concept of using one single needle to treat certain conditions is introduced.

Regarding the Ling Shu, Dr Mark McAuliffe further states, “The text emphasizes that acupuncture should be precise, subtle, and effective. It is not necessarily about the number of needles used, but rather the correct selection of points and the accuracy of their placement. It is noted that the master acupuncturist can use just one needle to achieve a therapeutic effect, rather than relying on multiple needles or a more complex approach.”

Dr Mark McAuliffe concludes, “The single needle technique reflects the principle of “effortless action” or “wu wei” (无为) in Chinese philosophy, which translates to achieving maximum results with minimal effort. This approach aligns with the Daoist principles that pervade much of Chinese medicine—emphasizing harmony, balance, and the natural flow of Qi (energy).”

The principle of effortless action or "wu wei" in Chinese philosophy as per martial arts and the single needle technique.
